Person Biography
Robert Armistead was the only son of Robert Armistead and Louisa Westwood of Louisa County, Virginia. His older sister, Mary Elizabeth, married Stevens Thomson Mason in 1783. Before 1800, Armistead married Lucinda Margaret Ellzey, with whom he had two children: Mary and Elizabeth. Lucinda Armistead died prior to October 1805. Sometime thereafter, Robert Armistead married a widow, Frances Heslop (or Hislop) Dalrymple, with whom he had five more children.
Armistead, a planter, lived at “Cottage Farm” in Cameron Parish of Loudoun County along the Little River Turnpike, approximately two miles from the town of Aldie. Armistead likely grew wheat, using enslaved laborers, many of whom he had inherited from his parents. He claimed twelve people as his property in 1824, at a time when the average Loudoun County slaveowner had fewer than ten enslaved workers.
