Person Biography
John J. Harding was born in February 1782 in Maryland to Garah Harding and an unknown mother. John Harding appears in Montgomery County, Maryland, in the 1800 United States census. He also appears in Shelburne Parish in Loudoun County after 1806. Harding married Dorcus Davis on 23 May 1810; their marriage appears in records for both Montgomery and Loudoun counties. They had eight children together.
Harding posted an advertisement in The Washingtonian in July 1810 regarding “a very considerable supply of spring goods” he had for sale in Loudoun. Later that year, he petitioned the Virginia General Assembly to be allowed to transport enslaved people his wife inherited from her father across state lines from Montgomery County to Loudoun County. In 1813, Harding purchased land in Leesburg from William Taylor for $300. He later bought several other parcels of Virginia land, including one from the Masons in 1830. According to information obtained during census years, Harding owned up to four enslaved people at any given time. John J. Harding died in July 1863 in Leesburg.
