Person Biography
George Head Jr. appears to be descended from the Head family that settled in Orange County, Virginia. He was born in 1783. In 1809, he married Mary “Polly” Gover, one of many marriages between members of the Gover and Head families. Following the birth of six children and the death of his first wife in 1823, Head married Hannah Gover in 1831.
Military records indicate that Head participated in the War of 1812, serving in both the 56th and 57th Regiments of the Virginia militia as a sergeant. He maintained a shop on King Street in Leesburg in the mid-1820s, and an 1832 advertisement in the Genius of Liberty identified him as a saddler. Head also served his community on both the Leesburg Board of Common Council and as the Town-Sergeant, early Leesburg’s chief law enforcement officer.
George Head Jr. died in 1870.
