Person Biography

Lewis Douglas was the second son born to Hugh Douglas and Catherine Nasmythe Douglas. His father was a prominent landowner in Loudoun County and was active in local and state politics. Despite the available information on his father, little is known about Lewis. He was likely born between 1795 and 1800. His occupation and family life are also unclear. His father’s will divided the Douglas estate equally among Lewis and his three siblings and provided for their education. Based on the information left in his father's will, Lewis likely led a relatively wealthy life.

Lewis Douglas’s death date is unknown, and he was not buried at Saint James Episcopal cemetery with his parents and siblings. Neither is he mentioned in his aunt Margaret Douglas’s will, unlike his other siblings. Lewis may have moved away from the family and lost contact with them or was cut off from them. Perhaps he joined the numerous others who left Loudoun County in the first decades of the nineteenth century to seek new opportunities in the West.
