Person Biography
Baker was an enslaved child held in bondage by Armistead T. Mason in trust for his underage cousins, Elizabeth and Mary Armistead. Folios 153, 154, and 155 record “Hester & her Children Baker & Mary” being hired out by Mason “for their victuals & clothes.” It is impossible to know Baker’s age or whether Baker was a boy or a girl based on the limited evidence in the Mason family manuscript account book.
