Abner Craven was born on 7 November 1768 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was the second of twenty children born to parents Thomas Craven and Eleanor Hough Craven. Abner’s brother John H. Craven (1774-1845) also lived in Loudoun County before moving to Albemarle County where he became a large landowner and an associate of Thomas Jefferson.
Abner married his wife Sarah “Sally” Sinclair in Loudoun County on 9 November 1799. The first of their children was born shortly thereafter, on 3 August 1800. Abner and Sally had five children together, their last born 29 May 1808. All but one of the children lived to adulthood. Abner Craven died of unknown causes in September 1808. He was 39 years old.
