Person Biography
William H. Harding (or Hardin) was born on 1 July 1777 in Loudoun County to Joseph Hardin Jr. and Elisabeth Presley. Little is known about his life except that he was a farmer. In 1794, Harding delivered 65 bushels of wheat to George Nixon’s mill for a sum of £69.17.9 ¾. A few years later, in 1799, Harding attempted to claim title to some of the land belonging to a plantation acquired by the recently widowed Mary Hanby. Harding owned a few properties within Loudoun, but there is evidence that he owned additional land outside the county.
Neither Harding’s will nor any estate-related documents appear in any Loudoun County will indexes, suggesting that he could have permanently left the area after his last appearance in the Loudoun court in 1820. According to federal census records, a William Harding from Virginia, who was born in 1777, was living on 160 acres in Clarke County, Iowa, in 1860. William Harding resided in Clarke County until his death on 3 January 1875 at the age of 97.
