Person Biography

The David Barnes who appears in the Mason family manuscript account book purchased “spirits &ca.” with cash drawn on his account with the Masons in 1801. It is difficult to ascertain the identity of this David Barnes, though the Mason family was related to a Barnes family across the Potomac in Maryland: Richard Barnes willed all of his property to his nephew John Thomson Mason upon his death in 1800. It is possible that David Barnes was a member of Richard Barnes’s family, which could explain his connection to the Masons.

One possible match for the account book’s David Barnes was born in March 1761 in Frederick County, Maryland. He married Elizabeth Hall in Frederick on 27 August 1787. They had seven children, including James Barnes, founder of Barnesville, Ohio. David Barnes moved to Ohio with his son and family, where he died in Barnesville in 1833.
