Person Biography

The Liddia Hough mentioned in the Mason family manuscript account book was most likely Lydia Hough, a resident of Loudoun County in the early nineteenth century. She was the daughter of Isaac and Rachel Hollingsworth. She married John Hough Jr. on 29 April 1772. Together, they had six children. Her son, Isaac Hough, is also mentioned in the Mason family manuscript account book. Lydia Hough died around 1832.

After Hough’s husband died in 1789, she managed her own household until her death in 1832. Her entry in the Mason family manuscript account book indicates that she was a legal client of Stevens Thomson Mason regarding a case against Titus Bennet in 1791. The particulars of the case are unknown, but it may have involved the estate of her late husband. As a widow, Hough was responsible for her husband’s estate, fulfilling his outstanding debts and preserving his estate for their children, especially their sons.
