Benjamin Jackson was born Wednesday, 7 June 1780. His birthplace is undocumented. He married Elizabeth Clapham on 11 January 1807 in Loudoun County. The Jacksons had two sons, William Benjamin and Samuel Clapham. Both of these sons lived to adulthood. They are buried in Union Cemetery, in Leesburg.
The Jackson family seemed to move throughout Loudoun County, appearing in different places in census records, and eventually settling in Leesburg. Benjamin Jackson was likely a farmer. He owned, according to census records, anywhere from six to fifteen enslaved people. They included children under fourteen years, men and women between the ages of fourteen and twenty-six, and people over the age of twenty-six. He did not employ any free people of color as far as the census records indicate.
Jackson had minor brushes with the law. The Loudoun County criminal records indicate that he was charged twice with “not keeping the roads in repair.” The Jacksons oversaw several roads throughout Loudoun County. These roads included two leading to the historic sites Nolan’s Ferry, and Catoctin Mountain. Jackson also oversaw a road to “Mason’s Farm,” which was possibly a farm belonging to Stevens Thomson Mason. Jackson had an account with Mason from roughly 1797 through 1813.
Jackson died on 12 April 1843, at his residence in Loudoun County. He and his wife are both buried at the New Valley Baptist Cemetery in Lucketts in Loudoun County.
